Striker & forward training

Strikers live on finishing, movement and holding the ball up. Most goals are one or two touches, so the details of the first touch and the strike matter most.

What we train

Finishing

Placement over power, first-time finishes and both feet.

Movement in the box

Near-post runs, peeling off the defender and timing runs to stay onside.

Hold-up play

Receiving with your back to goal, shielding and laying it off.

Pressing

Leading the press and forcing mistakes high up the field.

Drills to do at home

One-touch finishing

Setup:
Partner rolls balls across 10 m from goal.
Reps:
20 each foot.
Coaching point:
Side-foot to the corner; keep the shot low.

Back-to-goal lay-offs

Setup:
Pass into a wall, receive with your back turned.
Reps:
3 × 15.
Coaching point:
Use your arm and body to shield; play the ball back simply.

Check and spin

Setup:
Cone as a defender 2 m away.
Reps:
15 runs.
Coaching point:
Check toward the ball, then spin in behind as it's played.

Common questions

How can a young striker score more goals?

Practice first-time finishing with both feet, aim for the corners, and work on getting into the box at the right moment.

Is power or placement more important?

Placement. A well-placed, low shot is harder to save than a hard shot straight at the goalkeeper.
